Each artistic gesture—the mosaic, the panels, the poem—revolves around a single theme: the dove. A symbol of peace and possibility. The Dovecote’s art tells a collective story of renewal—of Harlem’s cultural flight, of home as sanctuary, and of beauty born from purpose.
Emmett Wigglesworth, Muralist: A Harlem icon whose work dances between spirit and story. His mosaic, fabricated in Ravenna, brings warmth and color to The Dovecote façade. Wigglesworth’s art has appeared everywhere from Sesame Street Magazine to the New York subway, but this piece—right here in Harlem—feels especially at home. His abstract doves represent freedom, resilience, and cultural understanding—a reminder that every home should lift the spirit as much as it shelters it.
Kent Bloomer, Sculptor: A Yale legend and master of architectural ornamentation, Bloomer designed the building’s signature steel façade panels. His work explores the rhythm of movement and the tactile joy of form—ideas that echo through The Dovecote’s sculptural exterior.
Rita Dove, Poet: Pulitzer Prize winner. Former U.S. Poet Laureate. The engraved poem at the building’s base is hers—an ode to rebirth, flight, and art’s power to endure. It’s Harlem history meeting literary grace.
